| Since it was established 226 years ago during the time of the samurais, traditional Japanese wood shop Ogura Tansu Ten has received quite a few unusual requests for custom-made furniture. But none as surprising as the recent one from sports fashion brand Onitsuka Tiger. | |
![]() | |
| Onitsuka Tiger began researching the ancient Japanese craft, hoping to find a way to create a Tansu-inspired sneaker sculpture. Though feared to be lost in time, they found that the age-old traditions of Tansu were still very much alive and well at the Ogura Tansu Ten wood shop. Not only was the Ogura Tansu Ten workshop true to the traditional techniques of Tansu, it was also a family-owned company. | |

| Spanning nine generations, Ogura Tansu Ten’s history dates back to the Edo period. | |

“Myancestor, Maruya Koemon was a samurai and the first Tansu master of Ogura Tansu Ten. 226 years ago, he founded our wood shop in Kamo City, located in the heart of the Niigata district,” says Ogura-san. The design of a Tansu can reveal a lot about its original owner. A Tanus with drawers to perfectly fit kimonos was likely to have been owned by an upper-class woman. A chest with more than a hundred tiny compartments was most likely owned by a shopkeeper who used it to store various small items, such as medicinal herbs. |

The ornaments also tell a story, as they hold symbolic meaning. A moneybag motif, for example, often indicates that the owner was wealthy. Iron hardware can also reveal a Tansu’s origin. Lacquer finishes and wood type can hint at where a Tansu is from as well. To get the know the story behind a Tansu, you need to see the chest close up. You may even discover secret compartments, hidden behind false doors and pseudo floors. Portability has always been an important characteristic of Tansu, and to hold this time honored tradition The Sneaker will also travel. It will be on a global tour with its first port of call being OFFSPRING concession in Selfridges |
